There’s so much more to a well-designed home than what immediately meets the eye. Experts say we only process 1/250,000th of what we experience in a room. If that’s true, there’s a lot more to consider than simply copying the hottest design trends that inundate us on social media.
When working with a designer or decorating your home on your own, start with asking “how do I want the space to make me feel??” Get very real with yourself.
Think about your every day. Do you want your home to calm you down or do you need it to re-energize you? Do you need to declutter your mind or do you need lots of visual stimulation to inspire and recharge you?
Color is one of the most impactful stimuli. Really sit with the idea of the space being light and airy…. Now sit with the idea of the space being rich, warm, and grounded with deeper colors.
You may like both concepts but for the most part… which do you need?
At different times in my life, I’ve needed the exact opposite feelings in my own spaces. When we moved to our current home I was in a health crisis so needed spaces to be clean, light and airy-- lots of whites, taupes, pale blues and neutral woods, maximizing sunlight during the day because I had to spend more time at home than I would have liked.
Now, I find I’m gravitating to more invigorating color palettes and schemes to ground me. Deeper colors are more of a risk for sure but when you get them right they’re incredibly cocooning and inspiring.
