Design Muse Series: Katie Holmes

Sometimes it’s just about having the right muse.

For a recent project, the client was having trouble defining her style. Gathering as much feedback as we could in the Groundwork phase, we realized that, in a multitude of ways, Katie Holmes could be her muse… or rather, our muse... as we interpreted Katie’s pretty, structured, feminine-at-times but often more clean-lined and casual style into the home’s interiors.

{NOTE: We wish we did but we don't know Katie... we simply used these readily available images showcasing her unique style to inform the project.}

The house, like Katie, is now put-together without seeming gift-wrapped or costumed. It is sophisticated without feeling precious, and it is comfortable without being grungy. Having the images to refer to was an abbreviated and fun way to narrow down selections and plan the spaces.

  • The powder room is classic and tailored with high contrast pattern and statement-making color.

  • The bedroom, a slight departure, is a tad more tactile and relaxed yet still pretty with some refined elements.

  • The dining room, more like Katie's red carpet moments and formal attire, has some updated elements but is crisp, classic and pretty. The defining feature, like her Zac Posen dresses, is the bespoke, hand-painted wallpaper in a subtle and sophisticated color palette.

  • The primary bathroom is clean, minimal, monochromatic. It is classic but with tailored, modern lines.

  • The kitchen is dressy but not formal. It's a pretty, workhorse space that transitions beautifully from day to night.

  • The butler's pantry is a sophisticated space that conveys a more intense mood through complete color saturation. The monochromatic look is capped off by a statement-making ceiling: a transitional light fixture on the abstract pattern of small gold birds in Farrow and Ball's Yukitori wallpaper.

While you don't have to have a muse as specific as we had for this project, any visual references you can supply to demonstrate your style will make your design project all that much more successful... and fun!
